Public Opinion Poll 2004

The Good Beginnings Alliance is pleased to announce the results of a recent public opinion poll, Public Attitude Toward Preschool, conducted by OmniTrak Group.  The poll clearly shows significant public support for a state investment in universal preschool.  A majority of residents believe that such an investment is immediately necessary to support Hawaii’s working families.  In return, residents feel that such an investment will strengthen families, improve student achievement and increase workforce productivity.
Highlights from the public opinion poll include:

  • 78 percent of residents called for a state funded program to ensure that all low-income families can send their child to a quality preschool
  • 60 percent believe that universal preschool should be an immediate priority item on the government’s agenda
  • Support for universal preschool was particularly strong within Native Hawaiian and Filipino communities
  • Support seems consistently strong; if necessary, 60 percent are willing to pay more taxes if revenue was dedicated towards universal preschool
