Good Beginnings - Community Initiatives

Good Beginnings Community Councils

There are four Good Beginnings Community Councils in each of Hawaii's four counties: Hawaii, Kauai, Maui and Oahu. A model of public-private partnering in action, each Community Council strives to find new opportunities to connect with families to benefit their keiki. Good Beginnings county coordinators, who convene the councils, are the front line in helping communities and families nurture their young keiki.

Good Beginnings Partnership for Hawaii's Keiki (PHK)

The Partnership for Hawaii's Keiki began in 2001 and is currently working with six partner communities across the state that have come together to embrace the challenge of improving the health, safety and school readiness of their youngest children. Our partners are neighborhood-based efforts that seek improved outcomes for young children and their families as well as improvements in neighborhood conditions by working comprehensively across cultural, social, economic and physical sectors. Additionally, partners operate on the principle that community building -- that is, strengthening institutional capacity at the neighborhood level, enhancing social capital and personal networks, and developing leadership -- is a necessary aspect of the process of improving outcomes for young children.

Supporting Keiki of Incarcerated Parents (S.K.I.P. Project)

Good Beginnings Alliance (GBA) has developed a 2 year pilot project working with incarcerated fathers of young children. GBA developed a partnership with two local organizations: The Hawaii Coalition for Dads and the Institute for Family Enrichment. The project has been a huge success; "The playgroup has changed the face of the prison." (Warden)

Good Beginnings Alliance is a member of Voices for America's Children.
